The Inquisitr has given their opinion on Maggie’s top 10 moments.

10. Maggie, the Saviors, and The Same Boat

While Season 6’s “The Same Boat” is one of the series’ more divisive episodes, in large part because it served as filler and neither Carol or Maggie were in true danger, the lone Greene left does get points for how she handled being captured by the Saviors while being pregnant. Maggie’s first lines of the episode? “They need our help?” Maggie’s response to being called an idiot for getting pregnant in the apocalypse? “When was it ever smart to get knocked up?”

In an episode that unfortunately repeats many of the same tired themes the show has tried to create under Scott M. Gimple, Maggie is an interesting change of pace in how she deconstructs the “we are the ones who live” tropes. Paula, Polly, and the rest of the Saviors in this episode never worked as anything more than villains of the week, but Maggie’s composure and ability to handle them the way she did was a great foreshadowing of her becoming the Hilltop’s leader in Season 7.

9. Forgiving Daryl

Speaking of Season 7, let’s think about Maggie’s arc through what is only about a two-week span as she loses her husband, is nearly sold out by the Hilltop, becomes the leader of Hilltop, and helps start a war all while wanting to honor her dead husband. That in itself is worthy of a spot on this list, but there’s one particular moment I want to highlight first.

In the comics, Maggie has always been weaker than her show counterpart, but her reaction to Glenn dying is much different, including a moment where she punches Rick — who she blames for her husband’s death — and has a gun pulled on her by Carl. It’s hard to blame Maggie for her grief, we acknowledge that, but how the show dealt with her character after that tragic night was so much more effective. We needed to see Maggie fight the urge to be this broken, fully grieving woman because she was never going to be that character, especially not when Negan was still alive.

Why is this important now? Maggie could have easily blamed Daryl for the same thing, but she gently tells him that it wasn’t his fault and how much Glenn loved him like a brother. Though there is an argument Maggie didn’t go off on Daryl because he’s the fan-favorite and it would have made her — and by extension, Lauren Cohan — look like any negative word for women that you want to use (if you don’t believe me, look up when people were calling Michonne and Danai Gurira a “Mammy” because her character hooked up with Rick), the lines were spoken with so much genuineness that this takes the ninth spot on our list.

The time for pussyfooting around is pretty much over. Alexandria, the Hilltop, and the Kingdom have joined forces on The Walking Dead to take on Negan — and taking on does not really include the word “negotiation.” We’re past that.

That’s what we learned when speaking to Lauren Cohan at our recent EW Walking Dead cover shoot. We asked her what to expect from season 8 of the zombie drama. “Season 8 — oh my God, we’re going to see so much,” Cohan said. “I feel like you’re going to see the group recentered with a very definite plan to move forward. It’s a really difficult period, a lot of difficult decisions have to be made — hard decisions. But there’s this giant plan that we’re rolling out, and that’s to really set up a new world. Because now we’re taking care of Negan and taking care of life so we can have one.”

According to Cohan, that means the stuff is about to hit the proverbial fan. “It’s really gnarly,” she said. “I mean, it’s war. We have all our different factions and communication pushing forward to try to get what we need. Tons of action this season. We saw everybody sort retreat and retract, and now we have the slingshot. We send our warriors outward and we formulate this plan, and then go out and decimate.”

The upcoming season 8 premiere of The Walking Dead, airing Oct. 22, promises to be action-packed. Then again, most of The Walking Dead premieres go heavy on the action, with the first episode of season 3 being a prime example.

That was when the group found the prison as a new potential home but first had to clear it of hundreds of zombies. It may have been five years ago, but that epic killfest still includes Lauren Cohan’s favorite walker offing ever. “My favorite walker kill in the first 100 episodes still is when we get to the prison and we have those riot gear walkers,” Cohan, who plays Maggie, says. “Mostly that was my favorite because we knew we wanted to capture that horror, and it was so funny and it looked so horrific, but we were actually just having such a good time — just pulling the knife out and all that crazy green goop going everywhere.”

Cohan also notes that Ernest Dickerson, who was directing the episode, had another iconic director in mind when he filmed the scene. “I remember that Ernest just wanted that Hitchcock moment of a scream and I knew I could really just go there. There are a few stills from that moment that to me epitomize the world everyone entered into at that moment. Just guts and glory. Crazy.”
